CLEARWATER, Fla. /Florida Newswire/ — Global Synthetic Ice, a worldwide leader in the development of synthetic ice has announced the support of professional ice skating coaches for their Super-Glide(R) synthetic ice products. What if the “ice” in skating rinks never melted? What if the “ice” was not real ice at all, but synthetic ice minus the slippery feel and all the maintenance headaches and costs of frozen water?

For coaches of tomorrow’s hockey stars and figure skating champions like former Olympian Oksana Baiul, synthetic ice is rapidly becoming their surface of choice. Synthetic ice can be set up anywhere, indoors or out, and used for unlimited hours of practice.

Take Latin America: Synthetic ice is bringing professional ice hockey to such unlikely nations as Mexico, Puerto Rico and Costa Rica, places where few would expect to find a sport often linked to winter and natural ice. According to NHL.com, the Costa Rican hockey program is played on a synthetic ice rink at a country club in San Jose — the only skating rink in Central America.

“The rink was long and thin, and the pucks would sometimes fly off into the food court while people were eating,” transplanted Canadian and Costa Rican hockey program founder Bruce Callow told the Tico Times. “But, it allowed our team to develop their skills, and provided an unlimited number of hours to train.”

Playing on synthetic ice can lead to building skating skills seen in National Hockey League stars like retired Canadian ice hockey defenseman Paul Cavalini. “I worked with my son for a week on our Super-Glider synthetic ice system,” Cavalini says. “He scored three goals his next game. He never scored a goal before.”

Synthetic ice helps figure skaters and would-be Baiul Olympians develop speed and endurance because the surface, with more resistance than ice, makes skaters press harder and get stronger, resulting in better jumps and spins and less fear of falling.

The Olympics and synthetic ice go back decades. In fact, synthetic ice first entered the long track competitions with the 1960 Winter Olympics, according to Wikipedia.

Synthetic ice is growing in popularity because no power source is needed for refrigeration. No ice resurfacer need be driven for grooming and no water supply is needed to keep the surface smooth. Synthetic ice can be set up anywhere and is extremely portable. Coaches and their skaters are growing partial to synthetic ice because it means that training time is no longer limited by the cost of ice time. The sole focus, coaches say, can be on technique and strength training.

According to Don Moffatt, director of facility programs for Serving The American Rinks (STAR), an association of the ice rink and arena industry and a joint venture between USA Hockey and U.S. Figure Skating, synthetic ice makes sense as energy costs rise. Synthetic ice today “is a lot closer to ice” than products of just a few years ago, Moffatt said.

Super-Glide synthetic ice was developed by Perry Boskus, a former award-winning hockey player and figure skater, as well as a coach for many young champion skaters. The Global Synthetic Ice company aims to share the joy of ice sports with the entire world.

BOCA RATON, Fla. /Florida Newswire/ — A customer-focused company that entered Florida’s homeowners insurance market pledging to lower premiums and treat consumers fairly has saved policy holders an estimated $14 million in annual fees midway through its first year of business.

Boca Raton-based People’s Trust Insurance Company (www.peoplestrustinsurance.com) has made good on its promise, providing the lowest average premiums in Florida, according to the state’s shop and compare website (www.shopandcomparerates.com). By working directly with the consumer (eliminating agents, sales commissions, and other middlemen), removing unnecessary or redundant coverage, and helping customers proactively safeguard their homes, the company reduces costs and risk and passes the savings along to homeowners throughout the state.

Nearly 13,000 Florida homeowners have selected People’s Trust and, depending on the county where they live, saved hundreds or thousands of dollars on what they previously paid annually for the same policy.

“For years we watched our premiums go up, even though we have never put in a claim,” said Sharon Wolfe of Boynton Beach. “Looking for some relief, my husband, Barry, and I called People’s Trust. We were overjoyed to learn we could save over $1,000 by switching, so we did!”

“Traditional insurance companies have layers and layers of cost they pass on to the consumer,” said Michael Gold, chief executive officer of People’s Trust Insurance Company. “We’re the opposite. We’re nimble, streamlined, and without the obvious excess, so we can offer the exact same coverage, or better, for much less.”

Gold’s claim is verified on the State of Florida’s insurance price website, with posted premiums for each insurance company based on filings with the Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR). In Martin County, for example, People’s Trust customers pay $1,840 for the same homeowners policy that would cost $4,883 with State Farm, the state’s largest insurer. A similar contrast in cost impacts consumers in Sarasota, with State Farm’s premium higher by more than $2,000 per year than People’s Trust on an identical policy (a Florida masonry home built in 1990, current replacement value of $150,000, $500 non-hurricane deductible, 2% hurricane deductible, no claims in the past 3 years or wind mitigation credits).

“Our employees and I live in Florida and have been affected by the same rising costs and difficult economy that have hurt other residents,” said Gold. “We’re all consumers who want the same thing – a quality product at a fair price. That’s the philosophy that People’s Trust was founded on and that’s what we live every day.”

To learn more about the People’s Trust Insurance difference or for a quote on a Florida home, call (888) 524-6003 or visit http://www.peoplestrustinsurance.com.

MIAMI, Fla. /Florida Newswire/ — The Expand-A-Lung(TM) Breathing Resistance Exerciser from Expand-A-Lung, Inc. was selected the #1 choice of the L.A. Times for breathing fitness training. Jorge Brouwer, inventor of the most compact (4-inches) breathing exerciser, manufactures and markets the easy to use “Expand-A-Lung.”

When asked about how his product’s success, Mr. Brouwer said, “We’re finally creating awareness about the importance of breathing fitness training for athletes and people who suffer from shortness of breath due to respiratory problems such as COPD. This exercise directly works the muscles involved in the breathing process (the diaphragm and intercostals muscles), and allows you to breath in or inhale more volume of air/oxygen deeper into your lungs. It also helps you to get rid of more carbon dioxide out of your lungs when you exhale. The end result is an increase in lung capacity for better breathing and superior performance.”

He added, “Research supports that the condition of the respiratory system is very important for endurance sports, and that respiratory fitness training can improve performance significantly in competitive athletes. It’s a 100% drug free endurance booster through better breathing.”

“In the past, this type of exercise was only available with bulky equipment in training facilities. The Expand-A-Lung’s pocket size (4-inches) provides the portability to take it and use it anywhere. This is the design feature that made it popular among athletes who most frequently use it outdoors and at home.”

The Expand-A-Lung(TM) is sold directly to the consumer through two separate web sites for $29.95 ea., including shipping. For further information call (305) 665-5787, or:

ROCKLEDGE, Fla. /Florida Newswire/ — LRM Industries, LLC, headquartered in Rockledge, Florida, announces a new innovative production line, custom designed for the unique, patent-pending STF Sheetless ThermoForming(TM) technology, which was invented by LRM in 2007. This novel line produces large thermoformed parts on 3 to 5 trolleys in a circular track architecture, coating molten polymer directly onto onboard traditional thermoforming molds.

These trolleys are computer controlled and all elements required for part molding are onboard. Pre-manufactured sheets are not required with the STF Sheetless ThermoForming(TM) process, allowing a significant savings in the production of large heavy-gauge parts, and very high productivity.

During the commercialization of this new technology, LRM has demonstrated that “coating” the mold directly with a profiled extruded sheet allows the production of deep-draw products with minimum thinning. A wide array of polymers can be used, and all trim and finishing waste is recycled onsite for reuse in part production. Additionally, thermoplastic composite thermoformed parts and structures can be molded using long fiber reinforcement with this same breakthrough, one-step process technology.

This new production line is designed to leverage the inherent advantages of going from thermoplastic resin directly to a large thermoformed part in one process cycle, putting LRM Industries in a unique position globally.

Company Information

LRM Industries, LLC is a joint venture company of NOVA Chemicals Inc. and Envirokare Tech, Inc. LRM was established to commercialize TPF ThermoPlastic Flowforming(TM) technology, a radically new and award-winning process technology for producing large, feature-rich, long-fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite parts in one fully automated molding operation. With the TPF ThermoPlastic Flowforming(TM) technology and the new STF Sheetless ThermoForming(TM) technology, LRM enables new innovative applications and designs in the use of plastics and thermoplastic composites to produce very large unitary structures where, to-date, it has been viewed as cost prohibitive or lacking in strength and structural integrity.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. /Florida Newswire/ — Widely anticipated new book about the Atlanta Courthouse Shootings, written by respected trial attorney, turned author, Shoran Reid. “Waking the Sleeping Demon: 26 Hours of Terror in Atlanta” (ISBN: 978-0-615-20749-0, Rella Publishing), follows the terrifying hours Former Prosecutor Ash Joshi felt hunted by Atlanta Courthouse Shooter Brian Nichols and reveals new information about events prior to and after the tragedy.

In the early morning hours of March 11, 2005, defendant Brian Nichols was scheduled to appear in court for the rape and kidnapping at gunpoint of his ex-girlfriend. This was the second time in less than two weeks Nichols was being tried on these charges as the first trial ended in a hung jury. Nichols took matters into his own hands and brutally beat the female deputy responsible for escorting him to the courtroom and escaped custody with the deputy’s weapon and ammunition. Nichols methodically set out on a killing spree of the people he felt responsible for his predicament which included Ash Joshi.

In less than 15 minutes, Nichols held five hostages inside the chambers of Judge Rowland Barnes, crept up behind Judge Barnes sitting on his bench and executed him by shooting him in the back of the head. He then gunned down the court reporter, and managed to make his way outside the courthouse and killed a Sheriff’s deputy on the street. Nichols set out on a crime spree, which ended with the murder of an FBI Agent later that evening. Waking the Sleeping Demon offers readers an inside look into this tragedy from a perspective rarely told – that of the victims.

It’s easy to recall the first and last names of heinous criminals who tore apart families and spread fear throughout communities across this country. The likes of Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dauhmer, The Zodiac Killer or newly added to the list, Brian Nichols, readily come to mind. Sadly, what’s not as easy to recall are the names of the victims and their stories. In “Waking the Sleeping Demon” Ms. Reid attempts to change the vantage point of the American conscience from the fascination and glorification of evil, to the emotional pain these serial killers cause in the splintered lives of those left in their wake, and what as a society we should do to prevent it from happening again.

“Rather than merely putting victims’ pain on display for a sound bite that would just as quickly be forgotten, I yearned to described their stories in a way that would make us all stop and ask what kind of society we live in if we continually dismiss peoples’ bone-searing pain, yet relish in stories of “why” their tormentors committed such atrocities,” said Ms. Reid. “I hope that people come away from this book, knowing that I have tried to alter the discussion, maybe even change the view of the general public from glorifying people like Brian Nichols, to respecting the loss of their victims, while striving to accurately record a piece of history.”

Opening arguments began Monday, September 22 in the Atlanta Municipal Court Building.

Her extensive career also includes nine years in acute care supervisory positions within the Catholic Health Systems (NY) and Princeton Medical Center (NJ). It’s all about our credibility and trust with our patients, caregivers, office staff and owners.

ORLANDO, Fla. /Florida Newswire/ — PlumReward, LLC announces that they have been invited to compete in the New Product Gallery to be held at the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Show in Orlando from September 5 to September 7 at the Orange County Convention Center. There are several categories: one being for best new technology. That’s the category where PlumReward fits in.

PlumReward has developed a device and reporting system that enables service-oriented businesses such as restaurants, car washes, and video stores to send timely coupons and promotions as text messages to their customers on their cell phones. Businesses can then track customer visits and coupon redemptions at their stores via web reports.

While mobile couponing has become an increasingly popular marketing tool, PlumReward has designed a system that enhances marketing while fostering customer loyalty.

“We are not about traditional text messaging,” Jonathan Goodyear, president of PlumReward, LLC explains. “What sets us apart from the competition is our focus on tracking the entire customer transaction lifecycle: first visit to coupon distribution; coupon redemption to future visits.”

So, how does it work? A customer comes into the store and has the option of entering his cell phone number into a PlumReward device. He is then asked if he wishes to receive coupons and other promotions via text messaging. PlumReward then tracks and logs subsequent visits. Customers can also earn free items/discounts based on number of visits, even if they opt not to receive coupons on their cell phones.

Business benefits include: increased revenue; no more loyalty cards; real-time marketing; and customer tracking. Businesses can also communicate with customers at ideal times such as right before the lunch hour when they are most likely to make purchases.

And, while other mobile couponing companies require customers to install software to their phones, PlumReward does not. It also operates with any phone that can receive text messages.

“We offer less start-up friction,” Goodyear says.

Current clients include: Jersey Mike’s Subs, Buffalo Wild Wings, Arby’s, Hollywood Tans, Planet Smoothie, Quiznos Subs and Pizza Hut.

Best new product winners will be announced on September 6 at 3:00 p.m. in the New Product Gallery, booth 1269. PlumReward will be exhibiting at booth 1470.
