TALLAHASSEE, Fla. /Florida Newswire/ -– Governor Charlie Crist and First Lady Carole Crist will host a traditional menorah lighting ceremony with Jewish community leaders this evening at the Governor’s Mansion. The Governor and First Lady will also be joined at the lighting by Rabbi Schneur Oirechman of the Chabad Lubavitch of the Panhandle-Tallahassee and Governor-Elect Rick Scott and his wife Ann.

“I am always honored to join the Jewish community for a celebration that recognizes the perseverance of such a historically proud and strong group of people,” said Governor Crist. “Hanukkah is a symbol of hope, and Carole and I are grateful for the chance to share in this celebration.”

Hanukkah, also known as the “Festival of Lights,” is an eight-day Jewish holiday recognized around the world. Each day of the holiday is commemorated by lighting an additional candle on the menorah. Today’s lighting is ceremonial. The holiday officially begins at sundown on Wednesday, December 1.
